↳ Erato

Erato is the Muse of lyric poetry, especially love and erotic poetry. In the Orphic hymn to the Muses, it is Erato who charms the sight. Since the Renaissance she is often shown with a wreath of myrtle and roses, holding a lyre, or a small kithara, a musical instrument that Apollo or she herself invented. In Simon Vouet’s representations, two turtle-doves are eating seeds at her feet. Other representations may show her holding a golden arrow, reminding one of the “eros”, the feeling that she inspires in everybody, and at times she is accompanied by the god Eros, holding a torch.

↳ Melpomene

Melpomene is the daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne. Initially the Muse of Singing, she then became the Muse of Tragedy, for which she is best known now. Her name was derived from the Greek verb melpô or melpomai meaning “to celebrate with dance and song.” She is often represented with a tragic mask and wearing the cothurnus, boots traditionally worn by tragic actors. Often, she also holds a knife or club in one hand and the tragic mask in the other.

anachromatic mythology: the muse of astronomy

Urania is a girl on cloud nine. She’s solid flesh and bone but sometimes she’s spun out of constellations and clouds that whisp around moons. She’s walking around the city with her chin tilted towards the sky, feeling the cold night around her, outstretched fingers reaching for the stars. She charted neptune in her sleep; venus swims in her bloodstream.

Ad astra per aspera - to the stars through all hardships (she’ll get there one day).

↳ Urania

The famous muses of Greek mythology played an important part of ancient Greek culture. The nine daughters of the King of Gods Zeus and the Titan goddess of memory Mnemosyne were the very embodiment of the arts and sciences, and were thought to be the reason certain artists and thinkers were more gifted than others. They were immortal goddesses that inspired great works from both gods and humans alike.

The muses fittingly lived with Apollo, the god of music and the arts, who was their leader, but did not claim them as his wives. Instead, the muses lived with Apollo on the slopes of Mount Parnassus by the Castalian spring and roamed freely from there to spread their inspiration around the ancient world. They often became lovers of both gods and great artists, and their inspiration was highly desired by all artists and thinkers. Their very presence inspired greatness in men, but no one could truly keep them around for long, mimicing the fleeting nature of inspiration itself.

Urania represented astronomy and held a celestial globe.
